i need a stardewvalley icon; poor leila part 1

"So, what're you doing in the desert today?" Leila's sitting sideways on the seat across from from Pam, staring out the window. She startles, blinking at the driver.

"Well, probably head to Sandy's little shop. She sells all these seeds that I've never seen in Pierre's shop, y'know?" Pam nods, remembering back.

"Her chilled cactus fruit are real refreshing." Leila hums, hand rubbing the handrail pensively.

"Gonna check out the Skull Cavern again."

"Doesn't sound too friendly."

"It probably isn't, but I survived it the first time. Besides, some guy called Mr Qi challenged me to get to level twenty-five."

"Mr Qi?"

"Yeah. No clue he is. Sandy never mentioned him."

"Huh. Well, you be careful, kid."

"Will do, Pam."

---

She watches Leila wander on down to the shop. Whoever had fixed the bus had also fixed the aircon. That was nice, given that it hadn't worked when she'd first taken on the job.

She reaches down beside her seat for an old copy of the Betoota Advocate, flicking it open to a page titled 'Local Man Says Government Shouldn’t Have To Say Sorry For Things That Don’t Affect Him'.

She's finished that article and moved on to a crossword she'd forgotten about when a sharp whistle draws her attention. Leila's crossing the road, heading over to the small oasis pond. Must be where that Skull Cavern place is.

She waves, and the young farmer waves back, a broad grin on her face.

---

She drops her magazine when Leila stumbles against the side of the bus, red running down her face and chest.
"Leila!" The younger woman looks like something's mauled her half to death. Where there's not blood covering her, there's dirt and bruising. "I thought I told you to be careful!"

"Wasn't quite careful enough." She slurs in reply, slumping further against the hot metal. Pam shrugs her tracksuit jacket off and bats Leila's hands away from her sides -- oh god that's a deep wound. It starts bleeding as soon as the pressure's off, and as she shoves her jacket against it Leila lets out the most awful sound and goes white under her tan.

Getting Leila on the bus is one of the worst things she's ever had to do, and the drive back to Pelican Town is just a blur.

---

"Any patients?" Maru shakes her head and Harvey frowns, rubbing his chin. Apart from regularly scheduled checkups, there's been very little business. Which is good, because it means that no one's hurt themselves. It's also bad, because there's less money coming in.

Of course, that's when Pam bursts in, shaking and covered in blood. Maru gasps, but Harvey's already stepped forward and has taken Pam's hands, turning them over to inspect them for blood. She shakes them free impatiently, and gestures to the door.

"I'm fine, it's Leila who's in trouble." Pam shoulders out the door. "Come on, she's still in the bus and I can't lift her, and--" Harvey grips her shoulder, and with a confidence that's entirely forced, smiles reassuringly.

"It's going to be okay."

---

It is absolutely not okay.

Pierre swears under his breath (having been fetched from the store by Maru) when they see Leila, halfway down the bus's steps, Pam's bloodsoaked tracksuit jacket wrapped around her waist, a deep gash on her face, and a glazed look in her eyes.

"I thought I told you to stay put!" Pam is just about beside herself with worry, voice rising in agitation. Harvey tries to put it out of his mind as he kneels in front of the young farmer, running through the triage principles.

"Hey there. What's your name?" Leila's eyes blink slowly, even as her pulse hammers away in her wrist.
"'m Leila, Harvey." A gash on her cheek stretches as she talks, thick droplets of blood weeping from it.

"Good. Do you know where you are?" Her arms are covered in scratches and puncture wounds, and there's a nasty graze on her elbow.

"Pelican Town..?" Her legs are in similar shape, but there's a chunk missing from one of her calves, as if it's been bitten away. Harvey nods, thinking. She's still conscious, but they don't have a wheelchair spare in the clinic at the moment. He turns around - bless Maru, she's brought the emergency bag.

"I need [2.5 ccs] of morphine, please." Maru nods, and kneels down to fill a syringe. It slips into the main vein on Leila's neck like a dream, and she sags further as some of the pain recedes. His nurse is waiting there for the used needle, snapping it off and into the sharps container.

"Can you please go back and prep for surgery? Leila's going to have to be anaesthetised for this." Maru swallows, but obeys.
